dc.description Frank Knox was instrumental in the establishment of intercollegiate athletics at Alma and played on the college's first football team in 1894. He left Alma near the end of his Senior year (1898) to join Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. In 1936 he was the Republican candidate for the vice-presidency. During World War II he was secretary of the Navy in the cabinet of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
